There’s a common misconception that you need to hire a coach for your business if you want to reach the next level. Or maybe it’s a social media manager. Or a copywriter. You can fill in the blank with whatever you think you need to help you make more sales, but honestly? I don’t think any of those are the first person you need to hire when you’re ready to start thinking big in your business.
In reality, making more sales isn’t going to do anything for your business if you don’t know what to do with the money you earn. It’s great to have these $100k launches and see your Stripe notifications popping off, but it doesn’t mean much if you're not using your profits strategically.
We’ve talked about cash flow and profitability on the blog before, but even having that information isn’t going to do much for you if you aren’t sure how to interpret it. So what’s the #1 investment you should make in your business when you’re ready to level up?
It’s not a coach, it’s a bookkeeper.
I’m not saying that just any bookkeeper will work, you need to find one that’s a good fit for you and your business. And they’re not all going to have the ability to analyze your numbers and consult with you on where your next move should be in your business. But when you find the RIGHT one — it’s totally life changing.
How a Bookkeeper Might Replace a Coach in Your Business
I’ve been a business owner for over 7 years, so I do understand the value that having the right coach can bring you. I’ve invested thousands of dollars in coaching and courses to help me reach levels that I never dreamed possible. I’m not saying you’ll NEVER need a coach at any point in your business at all.
What I am saying is that IF you don’t have a bookkeeper in your corner who can tell you exactly what your money is doing — that’s the first place to start hiring. Some bookkeepers (including us) offer consulting packages alongside monthly bookkeeping maintenance.
Which means that you’d never have to question things like:
How much money did I actually spend on that launch?
What can I afford to pay a new team member?
How long will the money I have in the bank last?
When should I schedule another launch?
Am I charging enough for this service?
And whatever else haunts your brain while you try your best to figure all of this out yourself. A bookkeeper that can look at your data through a strategic lens is going to help you understand your numbers and make empowered decisions instead of throwing money at random things you think are going to solve all your problems.
What Does a Bookkeeper Typically Do?
When you go to hire a bookkeeper, you probably expect them to make sure your QuickBooks account is accurate and run reports for your tax preparer at the end of the year. And that’s true, but some of them can do so much MORE.
If you’re focused on making more sales in your business, it seems counterintuitive to hire a bookkeeper in order to make more of them. Why? Because bookkeeping is literally just making sure that things you’ve already done are recorded correctly. But the thing is, all of those numbers are painting a picture for you (if you know where to look).
So we use data from your past to help tell the story of your future.
How to Start Working With a Bookkeeper/Consultant
Ready to understand your profits and feel empowered to make the financial decisions that can take your business to the next level? It starts with a bookkeeper who can act as a consultant for your business as a whole. Because when you know how much money you have to spend AND the most beneficial places to spend it, you have an advantage over eeeeeveryone else out there.
You can say goodbye to hiring someone to run Facebook Ads to a product that isn’t even profitable.
You can say goodbye to spending more than you earn without even knowing it.
You can say goodbye to wasting time on coaching calls that don’t even get you results.
Here’s what I recommend you do, even if you’re just starting to think about making the next move toward hiring some kind of support for your business:
Have a conversation with us first.
We don’t do the traditional “sales call” thing that makes you feel pressured into signing your life away before you even know what you’re getting into. Ew.
We like to start our relationships with a chat about what you’re going through in business right now and what you’d like to see change in the near future. There’s no pitch at the end, or any pressure to take action after the call. If we feel like we can support you, we’ll suggest that you allow us to perform a diagnostic review on your existing books. Then, you’d get a detailed report of what we found and what needs to be addressed.
But all changes you make in your business come down to a decision that YOU have to make, so if you’re still thinking that a coach you follow is going to be the best decision for you, great!
At least knowing that the benefits of having someone on your team who can guide you based on real data from your business (instead of generic, blanket advice) exists in the form of a high-quality bookkeeping consultant — you’re one step ahead of most other business owners out there.
