Look, we get it. Money matters can feel like a maze sometimes. We're often searching for that one-size-fits-all solution or a magical formula to solve all of our financial problems. But here's the truth - there's no one right answer. Financial empowerment is about more than just dollars and cents. It's about feeling educated and secure in your financial decisions, and that has to come form one place, which is within.
In this week’s blog. we cover:
Being financially independent as a woman CEO
Overcoming mindset issues with your finances
Aligning your money with your goals and values
Let's be real here. Building a successful business, especially as a woman CEO, isn't just about the external hustle. It's about the internal work too. It's about stepping into that next-level version of yourself and doing the hard but rewarding work to get there.
What is financial empowerment?
Empowerment comes from education. To feel empowered by something means that you feel educated about it and secure in it. Empowerment is not something that comes from external forces, it is cultivated through the work that you do internally. You have to make sure that you are working internally to feel that way because one person can feel empowered and while their world is empowered, someone else’s might not be.
It all starts from within. The only person that is going to make you feel empowered is yourself. If you’re reading this, I know that you want to make a difference. You want to make a change in your business, especially with your money as a CEO and as someone who is building your business, who is ready to step into that next version of yourself.
Stepping into that next-level version of you and making the big changes that you strive for comes from a LOT of internal work. This might not be the answer that you were looking for logistically, but it is just the hard truth that is not talked about enough. There is just as much work to be done internally as women CEOs who are building empires and leading movements as there is work to be done externally. You can only feel empowered because you did the work to make it happen.
The reality of financial independence
When it comes to finances, we are always wanting to propel forward and take strides forward, but sometimes you have to take a step back. Having financial independence starts with taking a step back and recognizing that it's okay to be your own human when it comes to your own money and your own businesses. It’s recognizing and trusting that you don't need anybody else to tell you what to do. You innately know what the right thing to do is, but sometimes you need to lean on experts to be able to support you, provide clarity, and back up your decisions with data. True financial independence is about knowing when and how to ask for support.
Sometimes you just need someone to help you feel validated. Sometimes there are formulas that you don't understand, there are strategies that you don't understand, and that's okay, you don’t have to understand it all! But what you do have to be able to do is find the right people who can help you understand what you don’t. This is going to sound counterintuitive, but being independent is about learning how to lean on others. So many of us perceive independence as not needing anybody, but that’s just a false reality. Independence means that you're powerful enough to know what you need from other people. I know that I cannot conquer the world on my own, and the same is true for my finances. You have to learn to receive and lean on your support system whether it is a friend, a biz bestie, or a professional.
It’s all about control
In order to have financial independence you really need to take a step back and just ask yourself - what can I do to control my environment? When you can control your environment as much as possible, because let’s be honest - you can't control everything, it allows you the opportunity to feel less stressed and less overwhelmed about the idea of trying to manage your finances, build your business, and wear all of the entrepreneurial hats on your own. It gives you such a powerful opportunity to take a step back and ask yourself how can I control everything as much as possible, and also learn to let go? You have to find a happy balance of controlling what you can and letting go of some things that you can’t control.
Here’s how you can gain some control and find a balance with letting go:
Expanding your knowledge and getting educated
Understanding your books
Doing your research
Leaning on other experts
Are you struggling with mindset issues around your money?
All of us will have to navigate our mindset and limiting beliefs around money at some point along our path. Especially as women, we have been conditioned to live a certain way, and instead of living like we’ve been conditioned to think we are supposed to, here we all are doing the dang thing, running these wildly successful businesses, and yet we’re not feeling empowered. When it comes down to it, there are a lot of deeply rooted money issues that women are dealing with and we just have to do the work. We are all on our own journey, and we all need to expand our mindset around money ourselves.
Again, It starts with taking a step back, recognizing your thoughts and beliefs around money, and working through them. The way out is through. You have to tell yourself why you deserve to make that 100k or even that million dollars. You have to understand what that would look and feel like for you and know that you do deserve to make a shit ton of money. Many of us have a negative connotation around people having or making LOTS of money and you need to understand that you get to control the narrative by the way that you want to use the money that you make.
At my firm, Magnetic Bookkeeping, we go way beyond supporting our clients with their books because we know how impactful your mindset around money is and we also understand that every business decision has a financial impact. Your money mindset is directly tied to the amount of money you are making and it’s time to accept that so that you can change it for the better. We had a client who truly believed that she could not make over 65k within her business and she knew that this was her underlying money issue. This was also her corporate salary, and she knew that she felt stuck here but she wanted to change that. We helped her understand that she had to take a step back and work through this money issue and tell herself how much she deserved to be making 75k. This client took the time to really sit down with her money issues and did a lot of journaling and did the inner work about her money mindset so that she knew why she deserved to make as much money as she wanted, and she started having massive wins to prove it.
If you don't take the time to sit down with those money issues and do the work to get through them, you'll forever be capped at what your potential can be with money because you've forced yourself into this little bucket, and the last you want is to feel like you have been put into a bucket. We do a lot of work around mindset with our clients and their money because we want you to feel so empowered and so confident in every decision that you make, and we also want you to know that you deserve to make whatever amount of money you desire, no matter how high.
Money is like a faucet
I believe that money is like a faucet and we can control when it gets turned on and when it gets turned off. I never used to have the mindset that I do now around money and it took me a really long time to get to where I am and to believe that money is that faucet. You have to see how you can think of money differently and detach yourself from it where it makes it easier to become aligned with your money mindset and your goals. I used to feel so stressed about money. I used to feel really guilty for making a lot of money and I used to think it was way too easy. I felt really bad about it for a long time and I had to go through a really hard time of working through tough money issues to get to the point where I now know that I deserve that big launch and I deserve to make all of that money.
So this is a reminder to you reading this that you deserve everything. Everything that you are putting into, you deserve it all.
How do you align your money with your values and goals?
This first step in aligning your money with your values and goals and getting crystal clear on what you want. Ask yourself questions like:
What do you want for your life?
What is the impact that you want to make in the world?
What do you want from your goals?
Let yourself play BIG with these ideas and everything in between! No more paying small. You’re making a massive impact in the world and you deserve to make large amounts of money. You have to feel this to be true for you.
If you just go about making decisions whether they are financial decisions or not, without really thinking about what do you want and what do you value, money can fly out of your bank account a lot faster than you want. For me personally, I like to take walks and think about why am I doing what I'm doing? Why am I building these businesses? I am always bringing myself back to my why and what I want for my life.
I know that you don’t want to just be able to pay your bills, you want to be able to live a happy life and live this life to its absolute fullest. It’s about continually coming back to what you value as a human and then also what you value in your business and how you want to support people. In order to step into this big version of yourself you really have to dream every day.
Ask yourself this… What does that version of you look like and how can you start acting like her today? How is this next-level level version of you constantly living your life? Why do you want that million dollars, or whatever your money goal might be?
If you’ve read this entire blog and related to any piece of it, I invite you to sit down and journal on these questions so that you can feel an unmatched level of empowerment around your money and move about the world knowing that money is not an issue for you.
